Apple Announces 2021 App Store Award Winners and Most Downloaded Apps of the Year – TechCrunch

Apple today released the annual preview list of the best apps and games of the year for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV and Apple Watch. This year, children’s app maker Toca Boca won the iPhone app of the year for “Toca Life World”, and “League of Legends: Wild Rift” from Riot Games was the iPhone Game of the Year.

Other winners included LumaTouch’s “LumaFusion” iPad of the Year app; Netmarble’s “MARVEL Future Revolution” iPad Game of the Year; Mac Craft of the Year from Luki Labs Limited; Cyan’s Mac Game of the Year; Apple TV’s “DAZN” app from DAZN Group; Pixelbite’s “Space Marshals 3” Apple TV Game of the Year; Grailr’s Apple Watch of the Year “Carrot Weather” app; and the Apple Arcade game of the year: “Fantasian” by Mistwalker.

Award winners are usually relatively newcomers to the App Store, those who have taken advantage of Apple technology in interesting ways, or those who have gained special attention during the year. For example, last year’s award winners reflected how the pandemic unfolded in the application world when the home training app “Wakeout!” won the iPhone app of the year and “Zoom” won for the iPad.

But this year’s iPhone app, “Toca Life World”, is an interesting choice for another reason. Its creator, Toca Boca, this March celebration its tenth anniversary. In the period since the launch of the first application, the company has launched over 40 other applications for children – or, as Toca Boca likes to call them, digital toys. “Toca Life World” is the highlight of much of this work, as it has connected previous “Toca Life” applications to a single connected experience.

Apple praised the award winner for “still masterfully repeating the art of children’s play and self-expression,” ten years later.

The choice also serves as a subtle reminder in the midst of a year of many reactions and riots in the App Store, that developers are building long-term business in the App Store, and Apple has helped play a role in supporting this success. , including through awards like these.

Apple also praised other winners, noting how DAZN’s streaming service has brought local sports culture to the forefront of global attention. Meanwhile, Apple is quietly creating a SportsKit framework for Apple TV and iOS applications, which DAZN could use in a day, maybe.

Apple has also promoted the best weather forecast in the “Carrot Weather” category, which competes with the default Apple Weather app and uses data from Apple’s Dark Sky. Apple has promoted LumaFusion’s ability to make video editing faster and less intimidating and the “efficiency and talent” of the Craft document editor. But it’s hard to ignore the fact that those apps also compete with Apple products – iMovie and iWork pages, respectively. In any case, much of the list is a reminder of how closely the destinies of third-party applications are tied to Apple’s own software developments.

Last year was a time of transition for the App Store, which faced increased regulatory scrutiny, new legislation in global markets and various lawsuits due to the App Store’s commission-based business model – including the ongoing Epic Games, now on call. . As a result, Apple has adjusted and clarified its policies and even reduced its fees in some cases, as dictated by market requirements and regulatory agreements.

Despite the changes, the success and quality of many applications, including award winners, remain high.

Announcing the winners at the end of the year, Apple also named “Connection” as the top trend of the year and celebrated a series of applications and games that had a lasting impact on people’s lives, given this theme. This list included the cooperative and competitive game “Among Us!” of the InnerSloth; the dating and networking app Bumble (whose main rival, Match, happens to be a notable critic of the App Store); Canva design resource; local restaurant guide focused on black-owned businesses, EatOkra; and Peanut Women’s Social Network, which launched its audio chat rooms this year.

“Developers who won the App Store Awards in 2021 have leveraged their own effort and vision to deliver the best apps and games of the year – sparking the creativity and passion of millions of users around the world,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook, in a statement. . “From self-taught indie programmers to inspiring global business leaders, these outstanding developers have innovated with Apple technology, many helping to stimulate the deep sense of unity we needed this year,” he said.

Prize winners will once again receive physical prizes from the App Store, which are inspired by the App Store’s blue signature icon, which is placed in 100% recycled aluminum used to make Apple products, with the winner’s name engraved on the other side.
