NEW DELHI: Congress paid tribute to India’s first deputy prime minister, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, on Tuesday, on the anniversary of his death. Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, stressing the importance of remembering its principles at a time when farmers are protesting against the new agricultural laws.
Patel, a freedom fighter who has also become India’s prime minister, is credited with unifying hundreds of princely states in the Union of India after independence through a mixture of persuasion, dialogue and even the use of force when necessary.
“On the anniversary of his death, we pay a solemn tribute to Sardar of India, the man behind a united India, Shri Vallabhbhai Patel“Congress declared on its official hand on Twitter.
“As a courageous freedom fighter and deputy prime minister of the nation, his countless contributions to nation building inspire countless Indians even today,” the party said.
In a Facebook post in Hindi, Rahul Gandhi shared Patel’s quote that “my only wish is for India to be a good producer and no one in this country to shed tears while he is hungry.”
“Tributes to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on the anniversary of his death. Today, when the ‘annadaatas’ (food suppliers) shed tears, we must consider the principles of Sardar Patel,” said Rahul Gandhi.
In his tribute to Patel, Congress Secretary General Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said in a Hindi tweet: “The British have threatened farmers in Bardoli with things like attaching property, but under the leadership of Sardar Patel, farmers do not they returned and Satyagraha won. ”

“On the anniversary of Sardar Patel’s death today, we need to tell this government that farmers are not afraid of false propaganda and threats,” she said.
Several other congressional leaders, including chief spokesman Randeep Surjewala, Rajasthan’s chief minister Ashok Gehlot, Abhishek Singhvi and Pilot Sachin, also paid rich tributes to Patel.
