Police said a 20-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman were detained after they were stopped and spoken to by officers because they did not wear the face that covered the complex.

The scenes became violent, and the couple was arrested on Tuesday afternoon on suspicion of aggression, before being released under investigation.

No officers were seriously injured during the incident.

The bullring, which now has only essential stores, click-and-collect and dining services open after the second city entered Tier 4 today, says clearly on its website that “face covering is mandatory throughout the center, including all our stores. ”

Moreover, government guidance states that they must be carried by law in all shopping malls and that the police can take action if members of the public do not comply without a valid exemption.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: “Two people have been arrested after three officers were assaulted in the Bullring.

“The officers had tried to talk to a man and a woman who were not wearing masks.

“One officer was punched in the face, another elbowed and a third was repeatedly pushed.

“A 20-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of assaulting an officer.

“They were released under investigation.

“Fortunately, none of the officers were seriously injured in the incident that took place on Tuesday afternoon.”

A spokesman for the arena and Grand Central said: “Safety is our number one priority. In accordance with government regulations, we encourage all our customers to wear a face mask in the center.

Following an incident with customers on December 29, police attended the center. This is now a matter for the authorities and we are helping them with their investigations.
