According to Ayurvedic practitioner Dr. Deepa Apte, there is a strong reason why honey is most beneficial in its natural, organic form, because cooked or processed honey can become toxic to our body’s defenses. She says,
“Ayurvedic beliefs suggest that honey is best consumed in its natural or raw goodness. Hot or cooked honey tends to cause “ama” in the body, which is a kind of toxic substance that is formed when the body faces problems with indigestion. is digested in the body, its properties become similar to those of the poison, which in turn can lead to many different diseases. ”
While Dr. Apte adds that much of this depends on the cooking process and the temperature to which it is exposed, heated honey cannot always guarantee the same health benefits as in its natural form.
Sheela Krishnaswamy, a nutrition and health consultant, while recommending moderate consumption of unwanted packaged, processed foods, adds that honey, in its warm form, can cause digestive disorders and can even become carcinogenic if exposed to extremely high temperatures.
“Nutritional science says that honey becomes toxic when exposed to direct heat and begins to destroy many natural properties and enzymes that should help you. Heating honey to over 140 degrees Fahrenheit for more than 2 hours will cause degradation. and rapid degradation. ”
It also adds a word of caution to people who buy honey from stores. “Consumers should be careful about the brand and origin of their honey. A lot of honey bought in the store goes through pre-processing and stored in plastic containers that are not ideal for use.”
