Former Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim apologized on Tuesday to a teammate after a furious confrontation during a Twenty20 tournament. The 33-year-old goalkeeper grabbed Nasum Ahmed after the two almost collided while going for a capture. Mushfiqur managed to catch the ball, but he shuddered as if he had thrown the ball into Nasum or thrown a shot. He faced a storm of criticism on social media for his behavior during the Twenty20 Bangabandhu Cup game between his team Beximco Dhaka and Fortune Barishal.
The most dominating Bangladesh player was fined by the referee after match.
“First of all … I would like to apologize to all my fans and spectators about the incident that happened yesterday,” Mushfiqur wrote on his Facebook page.
“I have already apologized after the match to my teammate Nasum.
“I am a human being above all and the gesture I showed was not acceptable. I promise it will not happen again.”
The post was accompanied by a photo of Mushfiq and Nasum.
The Bangladesh Cricket Council fined Mushfiqur a quarter of the match fee.
“We have considered his record, which is good,” said match referee Roqibul Hasan, “but he was warned that if the act is repeated, he will have problems.”
Beximco Dhaka won the game with nine runs to qualify for the December 18 tournament final.
