An army colonel accused of raping the wife of his Russian civilian friend after intoxicating her husband to the misery of officers in the Cantonment area was arrested on Tuesday.
“Col. Neeraj Gahlot was arrested while trying to flee to an unknown location to evade his arrest,” said Eastern Police Superintendent Raj Kumar Agarwal.
Police launched an operation for Col Neeraj Gahlot, whose mobile location was tracked in the vicinity of officers’ misery on Monday night, but he evaded arrest, said camp police deputy superintendent Nikhil Pathak.
A team led by Chakeri police station Ravi Srivastava was sent to arrest the officer, but his room was found blocked from the outside, ASP said.
The posted colonel was charged on Sunday with allegedly raping his friend’s wife during the officers’ misery, police said.
The woman’s husband, a civilian, filed a FIR against the army officer at the Cantonment police station, SP Agarwal said earlier.
According to the applicant, his wife is of Russian origin and has lived in India for 10 years.
The defendant allegedly invited his civilian friend to the officer’s mess and gave him an intoxicating drink that made him unconscious, police said, adding that the army officer later raped his friend’s wife.
The accused allegedly assaulted the woman when she resisted.
After raping the woman, the colonel took leave of his bosses and went underground to evade arrest, an official said.
The rape survivor was later presented to a judicial magistrate who registered his statement under section 164 of the CRPC, Mr Pathak said, adding that the statement was still presented to police.
