The UK government has decided to place London under the highest level of coronavirus restrictions on Wednesday (December 16th) due to a sharp rise in COVID-19 cases in the city, as a new coronavirus variant has been identified that is responsible for the spread of “deadly viral disease.
British Health Secretary Matt Hancock told House of Commons MPs that “swift and decisive action” was needed to keep things under control in and around London.
The level 3 restrictions announced by the British government mean that London will be placed in an almost complete blockade.
“A new variant of coronavirus has been identified in the UK, which could be associated with the fastest spread in the south-east of England,” Hancock told Parliament.
“We do not know to what extent this is due to the new variant, but regardless of its cause, we must take rapid and decisive action, which unfortunately is absolutely essential to control this deadly disease while the vaccine is being launched? Do we need to act now to change the curve? because when the virus moves fast, we have to move fast too, “he added.
According to Hancock, more than 1,000 cases are identified with the new deadly variant. Most cases were reported in the south of England. “Cases have been identified in almost 60 different areas of local authorities and their numbers are growing rapidly. Similar variants have been identified in other countries in the last few months,” Hancock said.
Hancock told Parliament that the World Health Organization had been notified of the new variant of the coronavirus.
Referring to the launch of the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine, which started in the UK a few days ago, Hancock said that due to science, “help is on the way”, but “this is not over yet”.
